At the Niagara Pensinula Hawkwatch at the Beamer Conservation Area near Grimsby, Ontario, the first 6 osprey of the season soared along the escarpment. One carried a fish as it travelled.
Also among the 1170 raptors counted on Saturday, April 3rd were 300 turkey vultures, 450 sharp-shinned hawks, 130 red-shouldered hawks, 12 northern harriers, 7 rough-legged hawks, and an immature bald eagle. Also seen in the conservation area was a tufted titmouse, at it's northern limits.
The Niagara Escarpment prevents cold air from reaching the south side of the escarpment and with the waters of Lakes Ontario and Erie, moderates temperatures and lengthens growing seasons. Hence, many vineyards, and peach and plum orchards in this area located on the edge of Carolinean Canada.
