On Thursday, April 8, 1999, we were able to observe over 60 monarchs feeding on crimson clover along a small state highway. It was overcast and very windy - most of the butterflies were not trying to travel - just staying low in the clover and feeding.
We caught seven to try to get them to lay eggs on some milkweed we have but all were males so we immediatedly released them. They were very tattered and faded.
