Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/11/1999

Number: 1

While searing ag land in the Rudement bottoms for spring wildflowers, I spotted a single Monarch. It dropped very low near some blooming mustards. The field was dotted with the yellow mustards, but the butterfly did not stop for a drink while I was there. It remained low to the ground for only a few seconds, then rose very high in the sky and disappeared in the blue. The wind was very strong,10-15 mph
with higher gusts, and out of the west northwest.

The butterfly was bright and was not obviously ragged.
It was interesting to me that it came almost to the ground, rather close to me and only just long enough for me to get a good look at it. Then it flew or was carried back up and out of sight.

I frequently see an early Monarch while warbler watching each year. They areusually solitary, as this one was.
