First Monarchs sighted were 2 observed on March 9, 1999 8 miles south Natchitoches, LA on I-49, Natchitoches Parish, LA.
Others so far, as of April 5.
1 on March 10, 5 miles north Natchitoches, LA on I-49
1 each on March 12, 16, 17, 20, & 27, Baton Rouge, LA, East Baton Rouge Parish.
2 March 25, East Feliciana Parish, 5 miles south Clinton LA on Hwy 67.
All above were flying and I could not determine their sex.
I'm 99.9999% certain these are Not local breeders. They show up around the 2nd or 3rd week of March every year, once during the 1st week of March. They are always faded in color indicating to me that they are overwintered. New offspring emerge last week of April and early May, and are instantly reconized by their bright and fresh color.
I have had no eggs laid on the six potted Asclepias curassavica in my yard as of yesterday April 4, 1999.
It is my strong opinion based on 19 years of observations made while travelling about
