I talked to one of the students who reported, and suggested that he might want to see a picture of a painted lady in order to compare and know for sure that he saw a monarch. He said, very confidentally, "No, I'm sure it was a monarch because I saw it up close." Also, this neighborhood in Lincoln is on the edge of the city (next to rural fields) so we do see quite a few butterflies, and my students are always on the lookout.
