Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/11/1999

Number: 1

We are still having some monarchs come through our area. The days have been warm - some cloudy and then some with bright sun. We manage to see about 50 or 60 monarchs each time we go out on a drive. We have been trying to catch a female in hopes that she would lay eggs on our milkweed but in the last three days that we have tried all of the monarchs we have caught have been males. Most of them are faded and really tattered. We were wondering if there was a reason that all of the ones we are catching now were male.

Have the monarchs reached your area yet? We are also seeing several Pipevine Swallowtails and Tiger Swallowtails around our area. Have seen at least two Giant Swallowtails. Maybe some will decide to make our outdoor classroom home for their larva.
