Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/26/1999

Number: 1

a basic (winter) plumaged Red-throated
Loon was noted on Pistakee Lake, Illinois, also. This bird was seen by
many and documented with a sketch and written description. This was
great as comparisons against the thicker necked bigger billed Common
Loons could be easily compared. The Red-throated Loon was not in
breeding plumage--it was basically white and gray with some brownish
in the back; the bill was gray and had an upturned lower manidible
with the bill being held above the horizontal; the forecrown, crown,
nape and back were a basic light gray; the chin, face, throat and
sides of neck were all very white with no side dark neck straight line
that you seen in Pacific Loons. The bird was smaller in size than
the Commons and "sleeker."
