Today, 4-12-99, I saw 1 or possibly 2 ragged and very faded Monarch(s)in the yard about 2 miles south of the ag field where the first Monarch was sighted yesterday. Today the first individual (female) was nectoring on
henbit and the other (or a second individual also faded) was flying
close to
the ground about half an hour later. It might have been a second one,
but I
cannot say for certain.
A hike around the hayfield led me to a newly emerged stand of dogbane (Apocynum, I believe) on the slope that faces southwest. There are several hundred tender plants with leaves still folded tightly against the stem. I found one Monarch egg.
