Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/17/1999

Number: 1

Hi There JN,
As President of the Montana Loon Society and the biologist who tracks loons for the state of Montana, I was thrilled to hear that loons were sighted in two different locations in NW Montana this weekend. The birds at Lower Crow Reservoir are closest to us here in Polson. The other sighting was of a pair on their traditional territory in the Swan Valley, which is the next glacial valley to the east of here. Our field work will actually begin May 1 and 2 when we will start to monitor territorial pairs, locate nests and protect those nests with floating signs so that the boating public will give them a little more room. We have about 200 loons in Montana (north of Missoula and west of the Continental Divide) which includes about 65 nesting pairs; 24-26 of which will successfully raise 1-2 chicks each year. Let the loon (monitoring) season begin!
