In honor of Earth Day, we moved 2 young trees to permanent locations on the school grounds to provide shelter and possibly food for wildlife. We have half a dozen bushes in our nursery garden outside the classroom that we hope to move in a few weeks to make room for new plants we will be receivining this week. We find one of the biggest challenges of setting out new trees and bushes in the school grounds is protecting the stems from overzealous weed-wackers on the grounds crew! Hardware cloth around the trunk for a few years plus mulch applied by first and second graders seems to be working well to save the bark.
