Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/23/1999

Number: 1

Contributed by Monarch Watch

I just watched a ragged female monarch laying eggs in my yard on the edge of Harrisburg in southern Illinois. She located a 3" butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa) before I did. I found
two eggs on one leaf and a third on another. After several loops around the butterfly garden, she located the ice ballet milkweeds (Asclepias incarnata) in my moon garden. Here she laid 8 eggs on the 8 plants. The plants range in height from 1 1/2 to 7 inches tall. Only one egg was laid on the upper side of a leaf. One 5-inch plant has three eggs, with two on the same leaf. She ignored two of the plants for some reason.
