Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 05/04/1999

Number: 1

We heard the first robin singing on the morning of May 4 in the woods just behind the school. The temperature at 10 a.m. was 22 degrees and a light snow was falling. We later saw two robins in the grassy area around the high school that afternoon. We also saw the first dark-eyed junco the same day at the bird feeder of the junior high teacher, and several students reported the first gulls of the season showed up at the village garbage dump over the weekend. There was a brief warm spell on April 26-28 when the temperature went considerably above freezing (it was 51 degrees on April 28), and the flies came out of hibernation and we could see mosquito larva in meltwater around the grasses. However, the temps went back far below freezing, the puddles all have about one inch of ice on them and the daytime temps haven't gone above 35 since. We've also had snow every day for the past three weeks, which makes up for the lack of snow throughout the winter. When it was warm we saw lots of swans,
