Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/02/1999

Number: 1

Contributed by Monarch Watch

Three second grade boys from my class were thrilled to report that
they saw a monarch last Saturday, May 2, 1999. The boys were jumping
on a trampoline in a friends yard. Our class tagged 67 monarchs last
fall so I would think their report would be reliable unless viceroy
butterflies emerge this early. It would be hard for them to tell the
difference. Another boy saw a tiger swallowtail Saturday. Our
milkweed in the school's butterfly garden is 3" high. I'm glad
students are aware of butterflies while they are out playing.
