Date: 05/17/1999

Number: 1

Monarch activity along the middle of the Texas Gulf coast: I counted 60 eggs since Saturday on about 2/3rd of our backyard A. curassavica. We also found 8 4th/5th instar larvae. The students have brought in 24 4th/5th instars (4 today) since last Thursday. The male released on May 11 is still patroling the backyard. Yesterday, we went to the "pasture" (45 miles west of Victoria) and at the gate were met by a monarch "floating" by ... saw two other monarchs as we were driving ... all moving slowly north. The A. viridis and A. asperula plants have seed pods ... most are still green with about 10% brown or open.
