Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/18/1999

Number: 1

A female Robin built a nest and laid 3 turquoise eggs in a Mock Orange bush approximately 10 feet from our back door. The nest is located at a height of about 3 feet above the ground, so we have had a clear view into the nest. Her eggs hatched about a week ago (5-10). She sat upon her pink newborn chicks for the first few days. A few days after their hatching they were covered with brown downy feathers and would sit up with open mouths (yet, silent). At this time, their feathers have developed more fully. They are visited by a parent, less frequently for occasionally for feedings. Perhaps to keep their location a secret and to distract any interested hunter. We have wrapped chicken wire around the base of the bush to deter our cat.
