Ice-Out

Date: 05/18/1999

Number: 1

Tuesday: Lots of excitement along the Tuluksak River. About 6 p.m., the current reversed and huge cakes of ice - some 100 yards long and 20 yards wide - came flowing upriver at high speed (estimated about 10 knots). The river started filling rapidly, rising about one foot every 30 minutes. Large trees along the banks were crushed by the ice. According to the weather service, a large ice jam south of the village on the Kuskokwim
River caused the flooding. The water came within two feet of the riverbank before the jam broke about 10 p.m. Most of the ice is now stuck on the banks and the water is slowly receding.
