common loons were first noted
arriving in western Labrador (53N 67W) on May 18 (Jean Lake, Wabush). They
usually arrive 7-10 days later than this, often in the last week of the
month. Winter ice on many lakes was four feet thick this year, but an
unusual warm spell in early May sped up the melting. Here in the Bay of
Fundy, migrating loons will continue to pass through mid-June. I suspect
many of their breeding lakes in northern Quebec and southern Baffin Island
are still mostly frozen too. Fascinating that they should arrive at
Anchorage, Alaska before they cross 53N in eastern North America.
