Mrs. Frank's second graders at Riverside Elementary School in Brainerd, Minnesota spotted two Monarch butterflies during lunch recess on May 24, 1999. The school is located on the banks of the Mississippi in Brainerd. The class saw the butterflies at 11:45AM. The wind was blowing lightly to the east and it was a bright, sunny day with temperatures in the low 60's. Both butterflies were brightly colored. The class located the butterflies by a few short (6") milkweeds close to the Mississippi River. Dandelions and trillium were also blooming nearby.
