All Other Signs of Spring

Approximately 9:30 A.M., Saturday, May 1, 1999, 11 whooping cranes were sighted swirling in a spiral like a kite tail. They were located 4 miles south of the intersection of Highways 15 and 91, in Colfax County, Nebraska, between Clarkson and Howells, rural communities of about 600 population. We were traveling in the opposite direction to an appointment, so I was unable to respond to my natural wildlife instinct the follow them north a while and watch them. In 1955 I sighted 17 Whooping Cranes heading south about 80 miles south of this sight. I believe I also sighted several in the fall about 10 miles west of Saturday's site, near Leigh, Nebraska, heading south a couple of autumns ago-Spiraling a quarter mile away from us.
