Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/26/1999

Number: 1

What I believe is a reliable sighting comes from former students (now 5th graders). They reported seeing a Monarch on the playground of the Connor-Jasper Middle School in Bovey, MN today. As I did not see for myself, I inquired about the observation. When asked if it was close enough to determine the sex, Eric Venema was quite sure it was a female as it had NO spots on the wings (I was so proud that he would remember! It has been a year since he was in my class). Adam Lane was the first to bring the news to me. Yesterday, 05-25-99, fourth grade student reported a sighting to me on the playground of the Vandyke Environmental Learning Center, Coleraine, MN (which is 1.5 miles south of Bovey). Students know that I require corroboration by more than one student for a sighting, but I trust this student totally, therefore, he most likely did see a Monarch. The weather has been good and the winds have been right for easy flight, so it is possible that the sightings actually happened.
