Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/14/1999

Number: 1

Just as last year my class reported seeing a monarch at the elementary track meet. I have confirmed they are back by going out to check the milkweed on 5/23/99. It is about a foot tall and I found one larva and also collected 9 eggs and could have collected many more. 8 of these eggs have hatched in my classroom so we have 9 caterpillars munching away on milkweed. It seems the traditional one egg on a leaf idea is not being followed because I collected two leaves with 2 eggs on them and usually I find about one egg per milkweed plant. Not so this spring. I wonder if it is because we have had an unusually cold, rainy spring and perhaps the milkweed is behind. I'm not sure because I've never looked for the first spring generation before.
