Hi Beth Allen;
Our gardens are small in the overall scheme of things, however they do encompass most of our property. Our front yard is sunny from noon to dusk and we have replaced the entire lawn with a garden. We grow all kinds of flowers, both comercial and wildflower, which are visited by butterflies and bees and on rare occasssion a hummingbird.
Our backyard has some trees and gets partial sun. We do grow several flowers and have a water pan as well. Our back garden typically contains about 6-8 milkweed which come up each year (they are about 10 inches high at present)and are visited by Monarchs. We've tried keeping a watch over the young on these plants, however we've found greater survival success over the years with raising the caterpillars in cages and releasing the adults as they emerge.
