Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/11/1999

Number: 1

We live right in Thorold, Ontario, within 200 feet of the Welland Canal, more precisely, at the top of the Niagara Escarpment within 500 feet of Lock 7 on the Welland Canal. I observed a single Monarch butterfly fly through my parent's garden (both families live in the same neighbourhood) while we were swimming in the pool. My parents responded that they had actually seen a Monarch two days earlier in their garden, which would have been 09.June.1999. Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) has been observed in the wild for about two to three weeks now, not yet forming flowers.
