Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/19/1999

Number: 1

Fields Elementary School students and staff observed migrating monarch butterflies visiting our butterfly garden. In addition, milkweek plants complete with monarch butterfly eggs on the leaves were purchased from a local nursery. The plants were placed in the hands-on science lab and observed by all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes. We watched as baby caterpillars emerged, ate all of the leaves from the plants (3), attached themselves to stems and plastic surrounding the plants, changed into chrysalises, then emerged as beautiful monarch butterflies!!!! They were then set free next to the butterfly garden! WOW! Now that was exciting! The stubs of the milkweed plants were then planted in the butterfly garden and are now blooming and feeding lots of butterflies!!!
