Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/31/1999

Number: 1

Contributed by Monarch Watch

Went for a walk this afternoon, and just as we crossed the street in front
>of our house, a Monarch glided by on the breeze. I don't know who was
>more excited, me or my kids, who wanted to immediately go back and get the
>butterfly net! Didn't see any more, although we did find 1 egg on some
>milkweed we passed on our walk.
>
>Unfortunately, much of the milkweed we normally monitor for larvae has
>been sprayed,, mowed, or built upon since last season. My eight year old
>was telling me that the next science unit they start will be "Habitats."
> I told him he could share with his class how the Monarch butterfly
>habitat is changing here in the Portland area, and how that doesn't
>necessarily bode well for the Monarchs. He replied, "Or for us!" I guess
> he's been listening to my "speeches" as we do our "science projects"
> here at home!
