Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/22/1999

Contributed by Monarch Watch

This past weekend was a good one for monarchs. I found a few eggs on
common milkweed plants growing in my garden. So I went to a nearby field
to look for more. I had a difficult time locating milkweed plants because
they had only recently emerged and most everything else was much larger. I
did manage to find a few plants but no eggs. Then a female monarch flew by
and stopped to deposit an egg. She was much better at locating milkweed
than I. So I followed her for about an hour and collected 45 eggs. Later
in the day I went to another field and found many eggs. Several plants had
3-4 eggs and occasionally there was more than one egg on a leaf. This is
the earliest I have ever found eggs. It is also the heaviest
concentration--rarely do I find more than one egg per plant.
