Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/27/1999

Number: 1

I saw a Monarch around 9 am this morning. It was a female and her wings were bright and fresh. She was nectaring on a butterfly bush. This is the first sighting so far this month. I last observed caterpillars in my milkweed garden on June 4th. The weather at the time of the sighting was cloudy with light south winds, high humidity and the temperature was 76 degrees.
We have had rain off and on for the last 5 days and temps have been below normal. Highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's.
I later spotted possibly the same Monarch on the same butterfly bush. This time she spent about 40 minutes nectaring. Sightings are rare in our area this time of year. It was a pleasant surprise after a quiet spring migration. I have about 22 milkweed plants. Hope to plant more in the future.
