Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/29/1999

Number: 1

The summer butterfly count was just done in Victoria and 3 monarchs were sighted there. A male we marked with a "7" (released June 17) has been in and around our backyard almost every day since. A female we marked with "4" (released June 14) was observed this morning (June 29) depositing eggs on Asclepias curassavica and A. fruticosa in the backyard. Eggs are being deposited and hatch but the larvae seldom make it to the second instar ... wasps and fire ants seem to get them. The heat so far (90-95) does not seem to affect breeding of the monarchs that stayed.
