Refuge Clerk Jen Cybulski sighted our first monarch this year! She saw it on June 17 outside of the refuge headquarters. It was flying over the lawn, near an adjacent wooded area. Jen didn't recall seeing any blooming flowers nearby, and reported that the butterfly's wings were in good shape.
This monarch is most likely the offspring of the monarchs from Mexico. The late date for a first sighting in PA is probably due to the population increase as the new generation emerges. There are far more monarchs at this time.
