Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/22/1999

Number: 1

My kids and I spent an hour or so following the Monarchs in my brother's backyard in Northfied, MN.just south of Mpls. We counted 6-8 monarchs that seemed to be mainly roosting in a grove of large Ponderosa pine trees. We caught, then released a male and female. The male was significantly bigger and brighter, in excellent condition. The female was more tattered-looking with frayed wings. The temperature was about 75 F with high humidity. We observed the mononarchs in midafternoon. around 2 -3 pm. The surrounding habitat also included lillies, hosta and other assorted plants and weeds. We mostly observed the monarchs just sitting in the pines or on the braches and leaves of the neighboring diciduous trees.
