We have sighted 24 monarch butterflies, we think. We were sure they were monarch butterflies, until we began studying more about butterflies and learned about viceroy butterflies. Because the viceroy is the state butterfly of Kentucky, we are wondering if we have sighted monarchs or viceroys. We are now doing some research into how to determine the difference (visually) between the 2 butterflies. Also, we do not always know if we are seeing the same butterfly and counting 1 monarch more than once. And, we are also not sure whether the monarchs we've sighted are migrating or living in our area.
