Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/20/1999

Number: 1

We have not had any "wild" monarchs in the backyard for almost 3 weeks. Any monarchs we see the next week or two "should" be migrants and not local "coastal" monarchs. The monarch females (9, with 8 males) in our outside breeding cage are depositing well over 200 eggs a day now and have done so for about a week. These eggs should be adults in about a month. Extremely hot and dry ... 98 today ... more than 12 inches behind in rain ... only .75 inches of rain since late July. Wild milkweed is in sad shape. "Cold" front due tomorrow, might push some monarchs into Texas ... "our" first monarchs last year were about Sept 25th.
