Signs of Fall

Date: 09/20/1999

Fanatastic numbers of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have been "stacking up" along the coast of Texas preparing to "jump off" and fly across the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatan. On Saturday, September 11, Altus estimated well over 60 RTHummers in the backyard at one time ... with as many as 12 at a HB feeder with holes for 8. Last Tuesday, after a small front, most were gone. There were about 25 at one time this Saturday, Sept 18. And then a light, but steady north wind and most were gone again. Only about a dozen today. They arrive along the coast, nectar, feed on small insects, and then make the "leap" across the Gulf.
