Signs of Fall

Date: 09/25/1999

Number: 1

On the afternoon of Sept. 25/99, while boating on Big Rideau Lake, we saw over 200 Common Loons, many in the process of molting. These were seen in 4 major clusters. The largest was counted at approximately 125. It was an amazing sight, when seeing more than two loons at once is usually considered rare. Cottagers watching the largest group told us that this phenomenon occurs each fall, that the loons remain on the lake for "several days, and then disappear". While Big Rideau Lake has a substantial summer resident loon population, there is no question that this large number had to have flown in from somewhere else.
