Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/26/1999

Number: 1

We found what we think is a monarch roost. A friend invited us to his deer lease to check out some orange and black butterflies and sure enough they were monarchs. There appeared to be several hundred resting in a small pine grove. The butterflies were on the north sides of the trees. There were also several hundred more feeding on flowers and flying over the nearby fields. Most were feeding on Tall Thoroughwort, and appeared to be very healthy - they were all very bright and had fat bodies. We caught and tagged several that were feeding for the Monarch Watch program.
