Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/27/1999

Number: 1

There have been numerous large sightings by students traveling to the nearby coast - on Long Island and in Westport/Norwalk connecticut. However, we have a major concern. It seems our area -- lower Westchester, NY City, etc. has had an outbreak of encephalitis. As a result, aerial and ground spraying has taken place over a large area. We hear that many Monarchs are killed by this spray. Do you have any information for us on how it may affect the migration/population. Please let us know. Thank you, Barbara Gurney, Teacher, West Patent Elementary School 3rd graders.
