Monarch (OTHER Observations)

We raised 2 monarch caterpillars on milkweed in our classroom.
They were less than 2cm long when we got them. They grew and grew until they were almost 8 cm long. On the weekend they both
made their cocoons and we found them on Monday morning.

Eleven days later we were surprised that they came out so soon.
We thought it would take 14 or 15 days! We got to watch them come out and pump their blood into their wings and then they got bigger and then they dried. It was Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999.

We put the stickers with the numbers from the University of Kansas on the lower wing. We had to be very careful not to knock
off the wing dust. One wiggled a lot more than the other when we put the tags on. The tag numbers were KX 009 and KX 010. The day was sunny and windy. When we opened the jar the teacher lifted out the monarch and it flew from her hand into a sweet gum tree. It hung out there for a while. It looked like it might almost blow off because it was so windy. We
