Tuesday was a cool, clear day. I spent the day preparing the yard and gardens for winter. By noon, four monarchs had arrived to nectar on the asters, verbena and buddleias in the warm sunshine. These monarchs appeared velvety and new. Two of the four were particularly small in size. They remained and fed voraciously until 5 p.m. when the temperatures cooled and the shadows moved in.
