Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/12/1999

Number: 1

My 7th grade students reported seeing 5 monarchs at the school tennis court area today. Each day this last week we have had one or two sightings of about 1-10 each day. A week before that, we had seen 2 to 4 hundred in the Abilene area, especially around post oak trees. We are wondering if most of the butterflies have travelled on now and have left our area.
Last Friday a student brought, what he believed, was an injured butterfly into the classroom. It began flying around the classroom and each class all day observed it. It flew well, and at the end of the day, we carefully released it, and sent it, hopefully, on its way.
