Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/21/1999

Number: 1

We went out to the clearcut and observed a large number of monarchs feeding on the boneset (pronounced bone-set) flower. We saw over 150 in a 2.5 hour period and caught/tagged 31! All of the monarchs were VERY FAT, apparently having been feeding on this flower for the past couple of weeks. Their abdomens were so swollen that they hung down during flight. As we began to leave, the first stirrings of a cold front began. I'll check later this week to see if they've traveled on.

After many years, this is what I have observed about monarch migration behavior through east Texas:

1. For three years in a row I have observed a single monarch during the first week in September, well before the main migration. These monarchs have been in excellent condition.
2. The migration direction of most migrants is westerly, although the later migrants take a more southerly route.
3. The migration is widely dispersed, rarely have I observed large concentrations at roost.
