Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/13/1999

Number: 1

Tylor Skrdlant and Brett Linden, both 5th grade boys at Lenora Elementary School, discovered a tagged monarch butterfly on October 13, 1999. They were playing outside at recess, when they both noticed a butterfly with a price-tag looking sticker on it. They thought someone had put it on the monarch as a prank. They cought it and took it in to the Jr. High Science teacher. He notice the tag had an 800 number on it and called. Butterfly R170 was tagged in Paonia, CO. It flew over the Rocky Mountains to get to us. Only 2 of the 600 monarchs tagged there were reported at that time, and ours was the only one in Kansas. The boys were on the local tv news and the local newspapaper. They even made the state news from Wichita, KS. They were very excited and it sparked a lot of interest from others in the school, and the community.
