Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 11/02/1999

Number: 1

Migrating monarchs continue moving to the southwest along the middle of the Texas Gulf coast. Yesterday (11-1-99) at 3:30 pm and parked near school 3 monarchs flew by in seven minutes. We then drove the 30 miles to Port Lavaca and went to the north end of the Lavaca Bay Causeway. We found 12 monarchs within 16 feet of each other nectaring on goldenrod. We saw 12 more in the next 200 yards as we slowly drove along ... with the bay on one side and wildflowers, roadside grasses, weeds, and brush on the other. A strong norther just arrived and may "stack up" late monarchs along the bay and barrier islands as in the past two Novembers.
