Signs of Fall

Date: 11/07/1999

Number: 1

The myrtles over by the small shopping center on University Avenue still have the last remnants of their magenta blossoms. They also have little berries. Some of the berries are olive green with cordovan (oxblood) patches. Some are entirely oxblood colored too. I am not sure what eats these berries or if they are poisonous. I don't think I have ever seen birds eat them either. I am going to find out what eats myrtle berries and add that to the questions above. By the way, the myrtles' leaves are mostly green with a few oxblood colored ones mixed in. They will stay this color for some time to come. The early (for down here) color changeis due to the two dry summers we have had which have stressed even the mighty myrtles.
