Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 11/13/1999

Number: 1

We made the 9 mile trip across the Lavaca Bay Causeway four times today and had a total count of over 110 monarchs. The monarchs were moving across Lavaca Bay from ENE to WSW in front of a light
E to SE wind. I counted over 60 monarchs along the causeway pennisula between 1 and 2:30 pm either moving past at 3 to 8 feet or stopping to nectar on wildflowers (esp. goldenrod) along the side of the bay. I was able to net several to measure, tag, and release (they were very wary!). Except for the late afternoon ones (which were smallish ~46-50 mm) all were large (~50-54 mm) and in very good shape. Remains very warm and dry along MCofTX.
