PEEC is a community based Project started in 1997 with the City of Pawnee,
Pawnee Public Schools, Pawnee Tribe, Pawnee Foundation for Acedemic
Excellence and the Pawnee County Conservation District. Twenty five acres
of city property below the City Lake was once a recreation area and a fish
hatchery that ceased to be used in the early 1970's. Fish ponds have been
turned into wetlands, "Green Reservoirs" and a youth fishing pond. 5000
feet of trails have been developed, three observation decks in the
waterbodies and over 400 feet of board walks are in place. Bottom land
forests and upland hardwoods are present. Identification signs are being
placed as plants are being identified. Center is open year around for
individuals to walk and groups/classes are attending on their own.
Migration of animals is easily observed with the variety of ecosystems
present.
