Tulips PLANTED

Date: 12/01/1999

Number: 1

We have had a mix of foggy mornings when our school started two hours late and rainy days when we could not go outside, but we finally got our tulips planted! Each of us planted one tulip in a circle around a young dogwood tree so we could keep track of which tulip was planted by which student. We made a circle of students around the tree and used a long-handled bulb planter to dig a hole in front of each of us. Then our teacher recorded our names in the order of how we were in the circle. We marked #1 tulip with a marker and we planted eighteen around the tree. It was hard to dig with the tool, but we did it. We couldn't use a shovel in that location because we didn't want to disturb the roots of the tree.
We planted fifty bulbs in one large bed and we're planting more in clay pots to force for inside blooming. Our weather has been very warm, so we had to put the bulbs in the cooler to give them the cool-down time. We cut several bulbs in half to examine in class.
