We created a habitat on our property. It was an over grazed sheep pasture and we planted native plants and shrubs and trees, and put out bird feeders and a bird blind. The students did the planting and also planned and created a trail. The habitat was created to attract birds and butterflies and takes advantage of a stream and a pond. It was funded by a grant I wrote to MBNA and by generous donations of plants from Octoraro Nursery and the Delaware Nature Society. We followed the guidelines of the NWF school Yard Habitat project and are applying for certification. We have also joined Project Feeder Watch from Cornell Ornithological Lab and will be sending them data on the birds we count at the feeders. We will be delighted to send you data too on the birds, butterflies, peepers etc.
