Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 01/22/2000

Number: 1

Our first hummer for Y2K was a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird. We feel that because of the two mild winters more than the usual number of hummers are overwintering in south Texas and along the Texas coast. It had been suggested that feeders be left out. We put two feeders out with clear nectar about 2:30 this afternoon and by 3:30 we had a beautiful male RTHB visiting the feeder and staying around the backyard. His only problem was the monarchs that are also overwintering, both are very territorial. We could still see Anna's, Rufous, Buff-bellied, and Black-chinned. Now to pay attention to reports of and await the true migrants!
