Last week during the big snow storm to hit the Washington D.C. area I first saw 5 or 6 male robins drinking from the waterfall in my backyard fish pond. They have been sticking around.
Sunday Jan. 30 during the most recent snow and ice storm I counted 25, again all males, in the Hawthorn tree in my front yard. They had eaten the easy to reach berries and after the ones that had fallen on the sidewalk were covered with snow they began to try to get the berries at the ends of tiny branches. Some actually would fly and try to hover while they grabbed berries in their beak. They then perched on a sturdy branch to eat. They sure chose a poor time to visit D.C.
