Tulips PLANTED

Date: 01/20/2000

Number: 1

It has been an unseasonably warm winter here in Middle Tennessee. Our first hard frost and snowfall occurred on Jan. 21; the tulips at my residence had even begun to emerge! I had been keeping watch over the weather forecasts since late October, waiting for colder temperatures to set in before planting our Journey North bulbs. Meanwhile, my students performed all of the preliminary data collection procedures suggested by Journey North, and identified a site in front of the school as being representative of a true Middle Tennessee climate. The students learned a great deal from these activities. Planting our Journey North bulbs on January 20 was a very meaningful and fun experience for them. We planted our bulbs in the shape of our school initials, FES, and look forward to watching them emerge later in the spring.
